Extreme summer weather breaks records
Summer 2012 in Canada has been a record-breaker, from the tail end of a scorching spring, right up to its dying days in September.
Recently in Canada’s west, fire destroyed three homes in Peachland, B.C., while in the Maritimes, tropical storm Leslie drowned the region surrounding Truro, N.S., swamped vehicles, and downed power lines.
Heavy rain and cooler temperatures on Sept. 10 helped B.C. firefighters get the fire 50 per cent contained, but an evacuation order affecting 1,550 people in the Okanagan community remained in effect.
Meanwhile, Nova Scotia was pummeled with rain, with upwards of 75 millimetres falling in the central part of the province as of the evening of Sept. 10, washing out roads, stranding residents and causing dozens of families to evacuate.
